I am often asked what is the most effective defence against cyber-attacks for businesses. Organisations invest a lot of time and money in the best firewalls, antivirus and cyber security technologies. While these things are important parts of a mature cyber security strategy, one of the best possible investments isn't just the technology - it's the people using it!
The best firewall in the world is useless if a staff member clicks on the wrong Internet link or responds to the wrong email. I have seen well-protected organisations suffer financial theft because they were following email instructions that they thought were from a manager or CEO when in fact they were from a cyber-criminal impersonating those people.
Investing in cyber security awareness for your staff helps keep safe practises at the top of their mind, gives them more confidence with using IT systems and makes them feel cared for. I believe that this is one of the most effective things you can do to make a world of difference to your cyber security - and your staff!
